"die"?  I usually translate "die" as "cease running due to a fault".  If
you turn it off with the key (like normal), that's not dying.

Since we're discussing the starter, I'm assuming that you turned it off
normally and could not start it again with the key.  I've been having
this problem off and on lately, but I've been able to start the car
after "coaxing" the solenoid with repeated twists of the key.

Try removing it and cleaning it.  I have a hazy memory of disassembling
an '84 VW starter once, thinking that the solenoid was "shot", only to
find that it was just very dirty.  Cheap fixes are the best!
