The 17HF battery should be readily available from battery stores. I know
Sears carried them at one time (and maybe still do). During my cheaper
years when I would buy used stuff including batteries, I even settled for
the 19L, the 6 volt battery that powers the Volkwagon Bug. Its a much
tighter fit in the battery box though.

Prices vary considerably. The catalog stores want $60-$70 each but I found
a battery store here in Billings, MT that sell them for about $45 (a couple
of years ago though). In fact I'm on my second set from them over the past
fifteen years.

There will be some on this list that will advise you to go with a 12 volt
battery that fits in one compartment. But for frigid winter weather, I
still like my 6 volts for maximum cranking power.
