I have never tried this myself either, but I can tell you right off it is NOT
a good idea. In the first place, it is unlikely that the wire will weld
itself to the key. Most likely, it will only arc and burn, splattering molten
metal all over the place. But, what if it did weld to the key - what now? You
now have a direct short from the battery to ground, through the key and the
key housing. Something, somewhere, is going to burn in two very quickly. Even
if you pulled the wire from the battery very quickly, before anything burned,
what would keep the key from being welded to the internals of the keyhole?

Not a good idea!
