It's summer in Australia of course. The last couple of years I have toyed
with installing an electric fan on the TC for summer.
Finally did it, and made up some easily removed bolt-on brackets with no
permanent modification to the car. Installed a thermostat as well.
Seems to work well (so far). Decided yesterday, which was hot, to give it
a real work out with a long run to a country town. I had noticed recently a
noise that sounded like a generator or water pump bearing on the way out.
The noise got a lot worse on this trip, so I stopped and took off the fan
belt to check it out. It wasn't what I thought, and the noise
(screech/whine) seemed to be coming from the front of the motor.
Decided to pull off the timing cover and have a look. A mistake. I had
originally installed a Moss lip seal here and it meant I had to mangle it
to get the cover off. Although I could get a similar seal in this town, I
had no desire to drop the sump to install it, so I went to a local shop and
bought some of the old rope seal, which is used for a number of purposes
other than LBC.
Could see no problems, so I removed the timing chain tensioner and checked
the oil hole.
Put it back together with a rope seal and no other change, except cleaning
the tensioner.
Result....no noise!! And I'm not sure why. Had a noise free return
journey today.
