Recollecting back to the sixties when BMC and Ford were having BHP wars, 
the shorter-stroke Ford had a higher peak BHP but the BMC engines had 
more torque, more low-down power, and a flatter power curve.  For a 
given size of engine the BMC had more area under the power curve than 
the Ford, which in the absence of dozens of gears, gave better 
acceleration.
