Scott and others,
This is quite commonly done when converting a VW from 6-volt to 12-volt.
VW didn't go to 12v until 1967. There are quite a few folks on the VW
Bus list I'm on who convert and then leave the 6v starter in. They say
it cranks awfully quickly, but the starter does tend to die quicker than
normal :-) .
