There should be a ground wire, it usually goes back to the trunk bolt where all 
the rear lights are grounded.  The sender, like the fuel pump, will generally 
ground through their physical connections but a) it is a bit of a tortuous 
route and b) for my money grounding through fuel pipes and tanks is not a Good 
Thing.
