There are two causes for this that I am aware of.
The first is caused by the brake warning circuit diode going short-circuit. I
believe
that this only causes the engine to continue to run normally if the handbrake
is on. i.e.
if you drop the handbrake the engine should stop. This diode is mounted on the
bulkhead
behind the glovebox and has one white/red on one side and two green/orange on
the other.
The current is supposed to flow from the white/red to the green/orange.
The other cause is a failed diode in the alternator. Inserting a diode in the
brown/yellow as suggested will allow the engine to stop but is not curing the
root cause.
