The TD does not have a hydraulic clutch, linkage is strictly mechanical. The
grabbiness is probably due to worn out motor mounts, believe it or not. Worn
out mounts let the motor move against the clutch linkage which moves the
clutch. Until I replaced the mounts, I was always either chirping the tires or
stalling the engine every time I started up from a standstill. If the mounts
are original, they are guaranteed to be bad. Rubber just doesn't last that
many years. (I originally learned or this motor mount/clutch connection right
here on this list. I forgot from whom, but I'd like to thank him.)
