It is caused by two factors. The first is having the idling set too high
and the second is the rough surface in the combustion chamber. Hot spots
develop and, because the throttle is not sufficiently closed, air/fuel is
sucked in and the engine runs like a diesel. Set idling at less than
750rpm. If you have SUs I can give you some further advice.
