Calipers

I've got my calipers on my workbench, and would like to clean them up a
bit, and repaint them.

I remember reading in a thread that it is not advisable to tear down the
two halves of the caliper, as it is likely they will never be sealed
properly again.

It sure is tempting, and I'd love to tear into them, but, should I avoid
this?
