OK, Jim, let's do the math on this one...............

Typical machine shop charges for a complete rebuild $500 (plus $100 if the
mains need line-boring, plus another $250 or so for a core if the head is
really cracked).

Typical parts in a complete rebuild - $1,000

Labor to disassemble, clean, inspect, re-assemble , paint & detail - 17 hrs.
@ $50 - $850

Suddenly $2,000 doesn't look too bad, so maybe that MG mechanic does know
what he's doing.............
