I had barely read the "cut them off" advice before I was at them.  I used a die
grinder on them down to where I just saw the threads poking through the brass. 
Then I hit them with a chisel (on the brass) to get them to deform loose and
unscrew.  I buggered the chrome dome thingies a little with the die grinder, but
not too bad.
