It's not normally play in the linkage you have to be wary of as wear in the
throttle spindle and bushes in the carb body itself.  Once this starts
letting in air it can upset the mixture.  My old carbs, for example, would
cause the car to hesitate before picking up if I eased the throttle open
just a little, but otherwise the car ran just fine.  I've never tried it
myself but some say that if you spray carb cleaner around the spindles and
the idle picks up they are worn.  However, the proof of the pudding is in
the eating, so if it runs well, then leave well alone.

You might like to have a look at my web site as far as setting up carbs (and
ignition) goes - select 'Spanners' and 'SU Carbs' (and 'Ignition').  It
relates to the HSs but the principle is the same for the HIFs.
