AMICA, an insurance company that seems to do most of its business in
New England, sent out a Holiday Safety booklet recently. In the auto
maintenance section was a part that said:
"To improve brake action and reduce brake noise, try a high performance
brake cleaner that removes surface contaminants such as oil, grease and
brake dust.
"To safeguard today's cutting edge brake systems installed in most new
cars, CCC (the Car Care Council) recommends Antilock Brake Systems
(ABS) brake fluid. Its extreme temperature formulation protects ABS
sytems in all climates from summer in south Florida to mid- winter in the
mountains of Washington."
That's what they wrote. Questions-does anyone routinely clean brakes?
Once contaminated with oil or grease, isn't it best practice to fix the
leak and replace the contaminated shoes or pads? What is ABS formula
brake fluid? Nobody around here has heard of the stuff....
