Rory,
  Look up on the firewall, more or less above your left knee, for a
little metal box about 3/4 inch x 2 inch x 1/2 inch thick, fastened with
one screw to the firewall. There will be two (maybe three) wires going to
it, one of which is from the fuel gauge.  
  To look up there, move the seat as far back as possible, slide your
head into the footwell and look straight up when your head hits the
clutch pedal. Remember to have a small flashlight in your teeth.
  Getting in and out is difficult, so if you intend to use a voltmeter to
test this thing, arrange for an assistant to disconnect/reconnect the
battery, and to pass the tools to you while you are partially immobilised
under the steering wheel.
