The distributor internals are an abundant source of weird problems and 
symptoms. Mine has at various times exhibited the following: loose clamp 
due to cracked case, bent shaft, loose ground wire, broken vacuum advance 
spring (connects to breaker plate), stuck mechanical advance weights. On 
other cars I've also seen a broken vacuum advance diaphragm, and a stuck 
breaker plate. 

Also check the float bowl jets for debris, or a loose jet, which can 
cause intermittent symptoms as it wobbles, effectively changing the float 
height.

Good luck, and remember, you may have more than one thing going on here. 
Sometimes it happens that way...
