A chattering solenoid indicates either a bad battery, or a bad connection in
the heavy current circuit, or even a bad connection in the operate wire for
the solenoid (BT, DT).

Usually jump-starting, or leaving the jump cables connected for 20 mins,
should boost a flat or bad battery such that it cranks over better than
before, even if it still isn't enough to start. If it had no effect you
could have a bad connection, but are you sure the jump cables were good?
Halfords in the UK (car parts store) sell jump leads with aluminium 'wires'
and the croc-clips just crimped on. The aluminium limits the current that
they will carry and the crimps usually go bad quite quickly, meaning that
clipping them on does nothing at all, particularly when you try to draw much
current.
