G'day Kids,

I've got a 76 MGB. Originally it was an American car but sometime in its
recent past, it was imported to Oz and converted to RHD. While in America,
it was fitted with downdraft Weber. I've had it about two months with no
more than the usual oil drips and no smoke.

Last week, she went off to a local MG specialist to get twin SUs fitted.
After much money was traded, I drove her home, followed by a plume of smoke.
Frantic phonecall to MG shop #1. They had fitted a PCV valve, a rebuilt PCV
valve and his suggestion was that this wasn't closing properly, allowing oil
into the inlet manifold and causing the smoke. Disconnect the PCV valve from
the crankcase, plug the pipe with a bolt and see what happens. I did and
sure enough, the smoke went away. They didn't have another valve to hand and
will try to get me one this week.

I took her for a thrash yesterday - no problems that I noticed, though I
realised this afternoon that she'd left a puddle of oil under her. I took
her out again today (not knowing about the puddle at that stage), stopped at
some lights, and smoke billowed out from under the bonnet. Now I don't know
about you, but smoke coming from under the bonnet tends to upset me. A quick
look under the bonnet showed oil all over the motor, motor bay and inside of
the bonnet (dripping down my neck as I peered under it). Not normal oil
leaks. I drove her home.

It's Sunday so frantic phone call #2 will have to wait for tomorrow. I
haven't had a chance to look for a blown oil line yet, and considering the
amount of oil, that is the probable cause, but could it be related to the
smoke and the PCV valve problem - after all, there was a hell of a lot of
smoke with the valve connected and a casual look suggests the oil is coming
from the crankcase vent. It didn't previously.

Any thoughts?

Prayers for a cheap fix would be appreciated.

Cheers
Richard
