Other possible causes:
Engines running too hot will after run.
An idle speed set too high can cause "after running" when the engine is switched
off.
MG used to also recommend "decoking" an engine to remove carbon. A build up of
carbon in the cylinders can add to "after running" problems. With modern fuels
and high speed operation this carbon build up is not as serious. However if the
car has lead a sheltered and pampered existence or has been driven to many miles
without ever reaching operating temperature on too many occasions, it could need
decoking.
