I'm not familiar with the "tiny" 44Ah battery.  But the size 26 12 volt 
battery, which I believe is common to many cars,  is not too small. It will 
fit relatively snug in the battery box, even with the plastic insert. My 
71BGT has extensive rust, even in the battery boxes, so I purchased the 
plastic inserts for added support. This is a good buy because you can make 
sure the 12v battery fits in the insert first. And since you are only using 
one battery box, the other one can store tools or other items.

Some group 26 batteries may not fit due to added lips. I found the Sears 26 
Diehard to fit snug in the box and it has a handle that allows me to pull 
it out quite easily.

As a disclaimer, I do not necessarily endorse the switch from the dual 6 
volt system to the 12 volt. My 67 BGT sports two new 6 volts. I only 
switched the 71BGT because of a delay in getting the 6 volt batteries plus 
I thought I would see how it really worked with the 12 volt. I'll report on 
the verdict next time I have to start the car at 20 below which will 
probably be at least three more months.
