Have a look at the coil connections. If the CB or +ve has a white/black
that goes to the distributor and the SW or -ve has a white then the coil at
least is still wired for positive ground. If it is wired the other way
round it probably has been converted to -ve ground.

Either way, if the tach is electric it might be safer to disconnect the
white wire from the back that terminates in a spade or connector of some
kind (not the white that goes through the inductive loop and back out again)
before connecting the batteries. Connect them negative ground turn on the
ignition and check for the warning light. If it is on proceed, otherwise it
is faulty and should be fixed ASAP. Try starting and running the engine at
fast idle. Monitor the voltage on the batteries and if it shows 12 point
something it probably isn't charging (the ignition warning light should also
be on still if it was before) which indicates either the generator hasn't
been converted or there is some other problem in the charging circuit. If
you get 13 point something and no ignition warning light (if there was one
before) then it is charging and has been converted. In that case you should
be able to safely reconnect the tach. Also try the heater fan (if it has
one) connected both ways round, if the motor is the same as the later Bs it
works better connected one way than the other and may have been overlooked
when it was converted.
