Most of the ones I have seen/used click louder when they are actually 
pumping and softer when they are pressurized.

It is a pretty easy way to tell when you are out of gas.  It clicks loud 
and doesn't stop when you are out.

If you don't want to drop $100 on something that works, you can get used 
to it.
