FWIW:

My 1972 Datsun 240Z (no flames please) has an air pump and no
cat. This is on a 2.4 liter 150 bhp SU equipped six. My 1981
Datsun pickup pickup does not. It does have air injection for
the exhaust manifold and a catalytic converter. It is a 2.2 litre
SOHC hemi-head producing about 135 bhp. How does it get by
without the pump? The air is self induced about where the four
exhaust branches merge. The air is drawn from the air cleaner
through a one way reed valve. By using a tuned header, the fresh
air is drawn into the system automatically by the exhaust
pulses. Perhaps that may be a way for those with air pumps to
throw away the pump and still provide air into the manifold for
emissions.
