Kevin:

When we were doing NEMGTR marathon runs back in the early 70s the
light was rewired to a float in the engine sump. The light comes
on when the oil level drops 1 1/2 quarts. It proved beneficial
recently when the oil drain plug seal started leaking. I have
drip pans filled with kitty litter on the garage floor under the
car. Consequently, I didn't realize how bad the leak was until
the light came on.

I also used the lamp as a turn indicator warning lamp on an early
TD to which I added turn signals. You have the ammeter which
almost serves the same function as the ignition warning lamp.
