Monte,

     Check the tension on your fanbelt.  The fans draw an appreciable amount of
electrical power that shows up as load on the alternator.  The depressed clutch
at highway speeds allows the engine to slow down and reduces the tendency for 
the
belt to slip.

Just MHO.  YMMV.
