If you are using the original-style graphite-faced throwout
bearing, it is possible that you either wore considerably or
burned out the graphite. Unless the clutch releases completely,
it is likely that the graphite was still making contact with the
flywheel....
Unfortunately, throwout bearing replacement usually requires
removal of the engine/transmission (I don't remember for sure on
the '80 Bs).
In short... bummer
But I could be wrong :)
