The main purpose of the bars IMHO is to maintain the cover in a taut, tidy
position when folded back for driving. The "flaps with snaps" then create a
neat, sealed weatherproof compartment on the back shelf, with zipper access.
When parked, the tautness of the cover is adequate to support it except in
the case of rain pooling, as you mention. Reversing the bars is a neat trick
when rain threatens, but I wouldn't want the bother of rearranging them on a
daily basis.

With a packaway top, the bars are not in the way of anything else, of
course. With a foldaway top, I suppose they might be considered more of a
bother.
