Hmmm, maybe it would have a tendency to do just that.

As an analogy, the flywheel tends to come to rest in one of two positions,
which is why a bad tooth on the ring gear can be such a pain.

But I'm not sure what to say about your symptoms. On my 66, every once in a
while I turn the key and get... nothing. But if it cranks at all, it fires
immediately. In my case I think the ignition switch is just about worn out.
