Listers,

All these posts about difficulties bleeding MGA/MGB clutches and (unless I
missed it) not one has mentioned perhaps the most common problem .........

In their infinite wisdom, the manufacturer of the clutch slave cylinder puts
the bleed nipple in the end threaded hole and a plastic plug in the side
hole, before they package and ship the new cylinders. In the course of our
business, we have seen hundreds of slave cylinders installed with the bleed
nipple left where it was and the hose connected into the side hole. THIS IS
WRONG! The nipple is supposed to be in the side hole and the hose is
supposed to go into the end hole.

Why? Because, to go into the side hole, the hose has to make two rather
tight turns; into the end hole allows it to make a less stressful U-turn.
Secondly, and most importantly, the side hole is located higher in the
cylinder. Air rises. If you want to bleed the air out of the cylinder, you
need to have the nipple where the air is, not submerged below it.

As to why the manufacturer puts the nipple in the wrong hole, who the heck
knows. All you need to know is that, if you own an MGA or an MGB, you should
check your slave cylinder and make sure the hose and the nipple are in the
correct holes...........otherwise bleeding the system will be much more
difficult than it need be.

brittle and broken. So I replaced it. Was attempting to bleed the
system..and after 10 min of bleeding I finally got fluid coming through the
bleed screw. spent another 15 min bleeding the system (just as I would a
braking system) but the clutch wouldn't build any pressure..(wouldn't
enguage). So last night I opened the screw and figured I'd let it sit till
Wednesday, then I'll have some time to go back at it. If it's not working,
I'll try manually moving the lever. I also gotta adjust the valves..time to
go figure that out ;)
