The way some other groups handle this is to tolerate a post "I have an
off-topic problem - if anyone out there can help me, please respond
privately"
Does the same thing and doesn't annoy the gang with repeated answers and
discussion. If anyone ELSE on the group shares the problem/interest, its easy
enough to e-mail the first poster saying "If you get any answers to this,
count me in on the discussion, please"
I doubt that such a short off topic post would bring down the collective
wrath of the group on anyone; extended off topic discussion invariably does.
