Hahaha yup, I've had this problem, except they slept on top of the soft
top!  One thing that might work is to use the fact that cats hate the
smell of citrus.  I got some spray orange scent at the grocery store,
supposed to be an air freshener, but I sprayed it on the carpet where
the cat liked to scratch and it seemed to dissuade him.
