I had  a similar situation.  While troubleshooting, I noted that the hood 
support on my 80 MGB LE had come disconnected on the fender.  It then 
knocked a wire off the starter relay.  Ergo, it would not start.

In spite of using nylock nuts on both ends of the hood support, the lower 
one had come off totally and the upper one probably had about 4 more turns 
to go it was free.  We were lucky that nothing shorted.

Word to the wise - check the hod support mounting bolts regularly and use 
some sort of locking material such as Automotive Goop to keep them in place.
