I went to considerable expense and trouble to change to the hang-down
spin-on filter adapter in order to stop the rattle of the rods when I
first
fire my B up after it sits idle for several days. It still rattles
unless I
spin it on the starter for 10 seconds or so to get the oil pressure up
before I start it. Needless to say, this ticks me off big-time! :-( I
have a slight drip from the adapter-to-block joint. I opine that oil
runs
from the main galleries and to the outside when the car is shut down.
Let
it sit long enough (couple of days) and there's no oil pressure until
the main
galleries fill up. I never seem to remember to get a new O-ring for the
thing. However, if I ever do service it, I'll probably change back to
the
cartridge type adapter that was on the car when I bought it. It never
rattled
until I "modernized" it. Yessir, I really improved it..... ;^)

On messy oil changes, I seem to remember that the cartridge filter
adapter has a drain plug on it. An advantage of the hang-down filter
is that you can fill it with oil before you install it. Disadvantage
is that you must jack up the car to service it. Tradeoffs.....

  Cheers,

  CR
