For "huge segment of the US population" read the "masses".

There is an expression "There is no hope for the masses".  Take sugar, fat, 
guns, and music for instance.  The masses eat lots of sugar and fat so 
obesity is now the North American stance, guns are poured into the hands of 
the great unwashed and crime with guns is ten times higher than anywhere 
else in the world.  Music has descended into mindless monotonous chant just 
like they used to do in Africa several hundred years ago......and now SUVs
