If the bearings are from one of the major suppliers, such as NTN (a Japanese 
company that manufactures bearings in the good old USA), NSK or the like than 
there should be no reluctance to use the alleged "Jap crap".  They all are 
made to industry standards and will perform a well as Timken (US) or SKF 
(Sweden) bearings.

Unfortunately we now live in a global world with both domestic and off shore 
companies making parts in each others countries and although the manufacturer 
may be based in a certain country this is no guarantee that the parts are 
actually made in that country.
