For those that are giving advice about my high idle problem, a little more
explanation.
I have NOT adjusted the valve clearances, timing, nor dwell yet. Before you
really come down hard on me, here is my reasoning:
The car was running great before I rebuilt the carbs. The only problem that
I could see was it was idling somewhat irradically-between 500-800 RPMs. I
found that the throttle shafts had play in them and were probably leaking
air. So I rebuilt and rebushed the carbs. My reasoning for putting the
rebuilt carbs back on and getting them somewhat adjusted BEFORE I messed
with the other stuff, was that if something was wrong (maybe it wouldn't
start or caused some drastic change) once I put the carbs back on, it most
likely was a problem with the carbs. Then I could get them somewhat
adjusted, check the dwell, timing, clearances and then fine tune the carbs
again.
Last year I had a non-starting problem on the 79B and had a hell of a time
figuring it out since I had messed with several things and didn't know
enough to figure out which one was the problem (being new to this mechanic
stuff).
So there is my reasoning; faulty though it may be.

I did think that the high idle might possibly be due to the timing being
off, since before I rebuilt, one carb jet was screwed way out and one way in
to get it balanced and maybe the PO adjusted the timing to compensate (I
don't know if this even would affect the timing??). I started to check the
timing with my cheapo timing light, but couldn't figure out where to attach
the wire of the timing light that is supposed to reach clear back to the
battery terminal. I would bet there is a terminal under the bonnet that I
can use in place of the positive battery post, right? That would sure beat
bringing in another car next to it to supply battery power.
So there's my explanation. Now fire away :-).
