1) It's an old low-tech way to check for spark: turn the diz cap upside
down while everything is connected; lay a coin across the center electrode
of the cap and one of the plug leads; with the ignition on, open the points
with an insulated screwdriver (if the points are already open, short across
them with the screwdriver); when the circuit is broken, a fat blue spark
should fire across the coin. 

2) If the car is in gear and just exactly the right position of piston in
that cylinder that just fired, it could cause the car to lurch forward.
