Kids do idiotic things.  They probably collect them or
something.  In my day, it was always Mercedes-Benz
hood ornaments (fueled, no doubt, by the fact that
Beastie Boys front man "Mike D" wore one around his
neck in an early-'80's version of "bling").

At least shift knobs are fairly easy and cheap to
replace, and can be stolen without doing much damage. 
Can't say the same about an MB hood ornament...
