The E clips are not really awful and nasty, if you get the knack of
installing them.  The screwdriver approach is one way.  I use a large
Crescent wrench.  Hold the wheel cylinder in with one hand, start the
clip with the two outer tabs in the groove of the line fitting with the
other.  Then grab the Crescent wrench and set the jaws so that you can
grasp the top of the clip with one jaw and the opposite side of the
fitting with the other jaw.  The clip is pushed over the fitting by
squeezing the jaws, which allows you to retain control of the clip.
Once the side tabs have popped around the fitting, the top tab can be
set with a tap from a screwdriver.  As stated in Rich's post, this job
can be made easier by securing the wheel cylinder to the backing plate
with a clamp, but it is not necessary.
