All the rheostats I have changed (four) including those on my 73 and 75 MGBs
have been of the printed circuit type, these burn out and are not
repairable. It is the brightest end that burns out as this experiences the
greatest wattage density when the rheostat it just off maximum brightness.
I have heard tell of wire-wound ones but never seen them, these *should* be
less liable to burn out I would have thought so it may just be dirt or the
wiper lifting off for some reason. Check it *is* the rheostat first by
bypassing it, on some models there are two terminals with two spades on
each, but only one connector on each terminal, so it is a relatively simple
matter to move one of the connectors to the spare spade on the other
terminal. BTW, you will never need sunglasses when at maximum brightness.

The only laughing is at the thought that someone seriously considered it
needed a rheostat in the first place :o)
