The 'twist and lock' feature is achieved by a blade on the inside of the
outer which sort of cuts into the shaft of the inner.  If it no longer works
it is usually because the blade or the shaft has worn down so the two no
longer lock together.  Replace it.  Tie a cord onto the end of the old
choke, and this should help you pull the new one in via the same route.  On
my 73 you need to remove the two fresh air inlets on the dash which lets you
get a slim hand and spanner behind the dash to undo and retighten the nut
and lock-washer.  The existing nut and washer will remain behind the dash as
you pull the old one out.  If you use a cord you can use the same items on
the new choke cable, or if you just yank the old cable out remember to
thread them onto the carb end of the cable just after it is fed through the
dash.

According to Clausager the UK choke knob changed to a T-handle on the rubber
bumper cars (changed on the 1970 models for North America).  But if it had
been replaced towards the end of or shortly after production chrome bumper
cars could well have the T-handle as that would have been the only one that
was available, until spares production of correct parts for earlier models
got under way.
