There are single piece invertors, that the whole unit plugs into the
cigarette lighter, and then there's the kind with a box (usually plastic)
with a pigtail and the cigarette lighter adaptor par attached. That would be
the only type suitable for an easy polarity reversal.

Fair enough point.

But, unlike your 8-track, I wouldn't expect Larry's inverter to have an
external metal case, grounded to it's -ve supply (although I've never
come across one of these devices in person, so I could be wrong!).  So
the only risky point is where the wires to the cigarette lighter plug
are cut and swapped, and it shouldn't be hard to do that in a perfectly
well insulated manner.

As an irrelevant aside, the (non-working) stereo fitted to Sammy ('73
BGT) when I acquired her had a handy little switch on the bottom, to
enable it to be fitted to either positive or negative earth vehicles.
That was quickly ebayed in favour of a Blaupunkt CD player...
