I think I replaced one that was worn when I got my MGBs, but since then they 
have been fine for 45k and 75k respectively, and are still 'stiff'.  I can't 
recall having to replace one twice in my ownership of any car over 40+ 
years, several of which had done mileages in the 60k range.  Drilling holes 
in my track-rod ends is NOT something *I'd* consider doing.
