The air cleaner you describe sounds like the original OPTIONAL air
cleaner that was available for +4s in the '60s. I think they were a
Purolator oil bath item, but do not recall for sure. I do know that they are
quite a rare item!
Unless you live in an exceptionally dusty region, I don't know how
important the air cleaner is, as I've had my "unair-cleanered" '64 since '71.
In spite of the odo, she has almost 100,000 miles on her and she (knock
wood) still runs well.
