Hi Mark,
I just have about two feet of hose and it hangs next to my distributer. It
smokes a little but it is about the same as the tappet breather pipe which
is also just exposed to the atmosphere. It makes sense to plumb it through
the carbs so the carbs "suck" the vent gases through the engine. I just
haven't gotten around to it. I think a vented cap should also help. I
picked mine up from moss about 20 years ago. If you want to go with K&N
filters check out a search with MG Experience in the MGB section for a
really cool mounting system which also incorporated a flared opening for the
SU carbs which helps the airflow. It was on the later model mgbs which is a
direct bolt on for the mga carbs. It gives you lots more air flow than the
stock filter set up. I have Stub Stacks on mine and they give me about 2
or 3 more horsepower. air flow is everything with these carbs. I also
noticed a few people selling the early mgb timing covers on ebay which may
the way to go. The timing marks seem to be in the same place as the mga so
you should be able to use your own pully. I have an early 1963 18G MGB
engine in my garage if you want to see what one looks like. I also have a
cherry picker if you want to borrow it to help you pull up the engine a few
inches to access every thing. I could give you a hand if you need it.
Liam
