I bought a remote lock kit from Autolock this spring (kit plus shipping was
$145), thinking I'd put it in my '56 Chevy TF. To my surprise I couldn't
find anywhere inside the door to mount it without making modifications to
the inside door panel or mounting the solenoid so low I'd have to chop up
half the inside of the door to locate and mount it.
The instructions from the company were sketchy at best (couple of pages with
bad photos showing it mounted in a late '50's car door (lots more room).
When I ordered the kit, I bought the extra installation instruction CDRom
for $14 but it wouldn't run in my PC. The company was next to impossible to
contact by phone (kept going from 1 menu to another), and when I finally got
thru, the tech told me I didn't have the right software on my PC to run the
CDRom. BS!! I called back the next day and told them there was nothing
wrong with my PC or 2 others I tried their CD on. They then told me to send
the CD back for them to check it! I said 'for what it will cost to ship it
back and forth, just send me another one'. But no go, so I shipped it back.
A week later they called saying they checked the CD and nothing was wrong,
they were sending it back to me. I got it back, it still didn't work.
Called them again, they finally gave me a website to go to they temporarily
set up so I could view the file (but couldn't download or save it).
I looked at the web site, it wasn't much better than the paper instructions
(too general, showed install on a mid-70's car). I had several friends over
to look at the kit and my door that have done this on other vehicles and
they agreed no way it would fit without making some major mods. I called
the tech line again, they told me to take digital photos of the door and
solenoid (with a ruler) and send to them, they would look it over. Got so
ticked I didn't bother.
Botom line. They sold me something they said would fit 'everything' but I
can't possibly see how that can be true. When I asked if they'd take it
back they said if I'd bought it in the last 30 days there would be a 25%
restocking fee. I'd bought it 2-3 months ago and they said no way they'd
take it back. Only consolation is I can probably put it in my '94 S-10
pickup this winter so I won't be out the entire amount. Not happy with
their web site, their tech phone help or anything about the company in
general. Make sure you buy from a company that can actually prove they've
done the install in your particular vehicle and ask up-front if they'll take
it back if it doesn't work and what the restocking fee is.
Take it from one who learned the hard (and expensive) way.
