 Doing this involves tightening the springs as you say,however as you have also 
apparently figured
out,it can be very dangerous!! If you are not absolutely sure how to do it i 
would seriously
consider hiring (ARRRGh what am I saying!!) a professional.

 This is one of those places you have to be particularly devious.I would 
suggest volunteering to do
some project for her that would be easier if you had a drill press,then 
blatantly screw it up. Now
kindly explain to her that you could have done a much better job if you would 
have had a drill
press,it may take a couple of attempts,but eventually she'll get the point.
