Thanks to all who replied. Summary below.

Lead/acid batteries do not have memory (only NiCads).

Discharging lead/acid batteries below 9V or so is bad and
will reduce ability to fully recharge - may still get up to
12.6 or 12.7 but will not take original load.

"Battery Tender" or "Battrey Buddy" type rechargers are
fine if they give enough "float" voltage - but a "stronger"
charger of the constant voltage type (not constant current
type) seems to be prefered and may be successful in
restoring an over-discharged battery. I've no idea how to
identify a constant voltage charger!

I'm about ready to give up on SBS batteries. They're much
more expensive ($240) and don't seem to have any practical
advantages. One recommendation is to buy the rechargeable
battery jumper boxes (Harbor Freight and many other places
for $39 and up) take out the batteries for the race car and
replace as necessary.
