Tim, you might be able to use a regular auger to dig this depending on how
rotted the wood is.

If they are not that bad, you might be able to pull them out and use their
hole as a starting point.

However, with something like this, it may be better to dig by hand.  (I
hate recommending to someone to NOT use a power tool!)  8>)
